    Frequently Asked Questions - Brows

Please reach us at kathy@browandlashlounge.net if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Microblading is a cutting-edge method of permanent makeup designed to enhance or correct the esthetic appearance of the eyebrows. A licensed and certified artist carries out the procedure using a special handheld tool consisting of very fine needle groupings lined up to create a blade. With gentle pressure these blades etch tiny hair like slits into the upper dermal layer of the skin while high quality pigments are inserted, creating the illusion of full and perfectly shaped beautiful eyebrows.

Microblading is one of the hottest trends in beauty today and is ideal for anyone 18 years of age or older wanting to enhance the look of their eyebrows.  Unlike traditional machine applied permanent makeup, microblading is applied manually by using a tool to tattoo fine eyebrow like hairs into your own eyebrows, creating the appearance of the full, perfectly shaped eyebrows.  When performed correctly by a qualified microblading artist, it is difficult to tell the difference between your real hairs and the microbladed strokes.

Personal preference sometimes determines whether someone should get microblading, microshading or powder/ombre brows.  Microblading is not ideal for everyone and sometimes powder/ombre brows are a more fitting choice.  A consultation should be scheduled to determine what is best for you.  Other determining factors are listed below.

Microblading either needs to be delayed, does not offer the best outcomes, or is not available to individuals:

    • with rosacea, eczema or psoriasis in the brow area
    • on chemotherapy drugs
    • pregnant or nursing
    • diagnosed with serious medical conditions (must consult a doctor for approval)
    • using Accutane (must discontinue use for at least 6 months)
    • using Retin-A or Retinol (must discontinue use for at least 1 week in advance)
    • who had Botox within a minimum of two weeks of service
    • who have had a chemical peel within a minimum of one month of service
    • who requires anesthetic and is allergic to lidocaine, tetracaine, or epinephrine
    • on blood thinning medications. (may affect the results)
    • under the age of 18 (Wisconsin law)
    • with extremely sensitive or thin skin
    • with oily skin
    • with large pores in brow and forehead area
    • with deep wrinkles, scars or large moles in brow area (may be possible to go around but will certainly have voids in the pigment)
    • with skin that keloids (some added risk)
    • with sunburned or deeply sun-tanned skin
    • with any active acne in the brow area
    • with any open wounds in the brow area
    • who have waxed or colored their brows in the past 3 days
    • who have received microdermabrasion or dermaplaning within at least 2 weeks of service
    • who will be menstruating closely around the time of service (may hurt more is all)
    • who have old, saturated pigment in the brow area already (in person consult is required)
    • who are ill or on any antibiotics at the time of the procedure

**Powder/ombre brows may be an alternative to microblading in most cases.

It is impossible to say for certain how painful the service is, as everyone has a different level of pain tolerance. Most people liken the feeling to multiple brow hairs being tweezed at once during the first pass across each brow. To help ease discomfort, Kathy does use a topical anesthetic containing lidocaine, epinephrine and tetracaine.  It is worth noting that, to Kathy’s surprise, she has had several people fall asleep while getting the service.

*It is not uncommon to be more sensitive to pain around menstruation

Kathy and you will have a consult.  The two of you will discuss the desired outcome and what your thoughts and concerns are.  With that in mind, she will give suggestions based on your existing brows (should you have any) and your face morphology.  She will then choose pigment color for you that you both agree on.  She uses high quality pigments created specifically for the service. She uses your natural brow and skin tone along with the outcome you are looking for to determine the pigment that will be best for you.  After signing the consent forms and addressing all questions and concerns, she then cleans your entire brow area and takes a few photos for reference. Using special tools Kathy then draws the design and verifies the symmetry for the best possible outcome. After you both agree on the design, numbing cream will be applied.  Once that has taken affect, Kathy will begin the procedure making several passes using a sterile single use microblading tool to go over each brow making sure the pigment is implanted into the correct depth of skin. After the brows are completed, she shows you the end result and explains in detail how to care for your healing brows.

Your microblading is not considered complete after your first session. You must come back 4-6 weeks later to perfect the brows. It isn’t until 4-6 weeks post perfecting session that your brows will have healed and show the true final result.  There is no exception to the 4–6-week rule.  If more than 4 months passes after your initial service, your perfecting session will no longer be an included service and you will be charged for any further sessions.

It is impossible to say for certain how long your microblading will last. Multiple factors such as age, skin type and lifestyle determine the longevity. As a general rule you should return for a refresher at around the year mark. (some longer, some sooner) Kathy will discuss tips to get the most longevity. Use of Retin-A, Retinols and acidic products after the procedure before 30 day mark may cause premature fading. Even after fully healed, continued use of these products in general can decrease longevity.

*Please be sure you qualify for the microblading service by reading the FAQ labeled: “Am I a candidate for microblading”

*It is not necessary or ideal to tweeze or wax your brows in advance of your service

*Bleeding can result in poor pigment retention. 24 hours pre procedure please avoid blood thinning agents such as ibuprofen, aspirin, niacin, vitamin E and alcohol. Tylenol can be a good alternative. (always consult your doctor)

*Please do not bring a guest to your appointment. Kathy takes this service very seriously and feels it is necessary to have zero distractions for both parties involved.

*Do not perform any heavy work on the day of the procedure

*Avoid caffeine the day of the procedure for best results

*Come with a clean face free of lotions, creams and foundations in forehead, lids and brow area

    *Wear comfortable clothing

More detailed after care instructions and supplies will be provided and discussed at length at the close of service. It is very important that aftercare instructions are followed closely.

    Things to note in advance:

    For 5 days ideally:
    *no exercise

    For 2 full weeks:
*no swimming (including pools, hot tubs, oceans, lakes and rivers)
*do not use a sauna or take long hot showers
    *no stomach sleeping
    *no picking or scratching
*no touching aside from as directed in Kathy’s aftercare instructions discussed at the close of service
*avoid sun exposure on the brows (most important while healing but for the life of the brows to avoid premature fading and skin damage)
*no treatment in or around the brow area such as facials, coloring and lash enhancements etc.
*Avoid water on the brows except as directed in Kathy’s after care instructions discussed at the close of service

The healing process can be difficult for people to adjust to. “Brow shock” is a very real thing. If you find you are regretting your decision in the first 24 hours based on the current look of your brows, it is very important to remember it takes at least a FULL MONTH to see the true outcome of the first session. The brows WILL be darker and slightly larger in the first week or so. Slight asymmetry is not uncommon. Depending on the pigment used you may see more warmth for a short time. To avoid unwanted results, you must fully understand what you are getting yourself into and choose a practitioner you feel 100% comfortable with. Discuss your expectations and desired outcome with your artist, including the shape, style, and color you wish to have. Realize that faces are never perfectly symmetrical and your artist is not a copy machine. Brows are sisters not twins.  Adjustments may be made during the perfecting session. Remember that microbladed brows will fade and touch ups are necessary.

When pre and post care instructions are followed, the risk of complications are rare. However, should you suspect an infection, it is necessary for you to contact your health care provider immediately to avoid any complications. This is at the cost of the customer. Kathy is not qualified to diagnose or treat any medical issues that should arise.

If you have sensitive skin or allergies to topical makeup products, gold, silver, nickel, or hair dyes you should contact Kathy to set up a patch test a few days in advance of your procedure. Should you choose to skip this step, Kathy cannot be held liable for any reactions you may experience.

    * Remember there are no guarantees in any tattooing procedures

** Kathy would like to note that she has yet to see a single infection or complication from any of her services.

An in-person consultation is mandatory if you have received any form of tattoo eyebrow enhancements from another artist. Kathy has the right to refuse services to anyone should she feel you are not a good candidate for her services. If
Kathy feels she is able to go forward with booking your services, you will be considered a new client and must complete both the first procedure and return for the perfecting session as any new client for best results.

Kathy is certified, licensed, inspected and approved by the state of Wisconsin to perform such services to the general public. Your health and safety are of utmost importance to her; therefore, she uses high quality single use sterile tools,
maintains a clean service environment, completes bloodborne pathogen training on a yearly basis, and never stops educating herself on her craft. All this being stated, rest assured you are in great hands.

A nonrefundable booking fee/deposit is collected to protect Kathy’s time. A mandatory 48-hour notice may allow for Kathy to fill your spot on the schedule should you need to reschedule or cancel. If you do not allow for a 48-hour notice, it is within Kathy’s right to retain the booking fee. If you allow for the 48-hour notice or keep your scheduled appointment, Kathy will discount the booking fee from the full price of the service; the balance of which is due at the close of the first session (nothing due at the perfecting session).  If you do not allow for the 48-hour notice and would like to book for the future, another nonrefundable fee is assessed. Same goes for the perfecting session only, you will have to pay the additional fee.

When referring to any form of permanent makeup-like enhancing tattoos, it is important to understand that the term “semi-permanent” and “permanent” are commonly misconstrued. The term “semi-permanent” only refers to the fact that the pigment does not wash off daily. The color must be refreshed in a time frame based on a case-to-case basis to look its best. There will always be some trace of pigment molecules in the skin, therefore it is in fact a “permanent” procedure. Not only does the pigment used for permanent cosmetics consist of slightly different sized molecules, but the skin on our face metabolizes the pigment faster than other areas of the body.

    Frequently Asked Questions - Lashes

Please reach us at kathy@browandlashlounge.net if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes.  Good quality eyelash extensions require time and precision.  When applied properly by trained professionals, lash extensions are a safe procedure.  The eye is fully closed and protected, and our adhesive is high quality adhesive which is safe for eyelash extensions.

When applied properly, semi-permanent lashes can last up to 2 months, depending on the natural growth cycle of your eyelashes and the expertise of the technician applying your extensions.  To maintain the look of your lashes, a retouch will be required every 2-3 weeks.

Yes.  After initial cure time of 24-48 hours, the formulated adhesive allows clients to shower, swim, exercise and sleep worry-free while wearing them.

Reactions are rare but they can happen.  It is also possible to gradually acquire an intolerance to adhesive, so you can get your lashes done several times and then start to notice symptoms of intolerance.  If there are any signs or symptoms of intolerance after you have had a procedure, you should immediately consult a physician.  Our artists are not qualified to diagnose medical conditions.

We recommend getting a retouch every two to three weeks.  A natural eyelash sheds every 60-90 days on average due to the natural growth cycle and is replaced with the growth of a new eyelash.  At any given moment each of your natural lashes is at a different stage of this cycle.  A retouch is needed to replenish the lashes that have competed their life cycle.  Retouches generally take a short time and are relatively inexpensive.

    First 24-48 Hours:

    • Keep lashes dry - no water, products, make-up or sunscreen near eye area.
    • No contact around the eye area - do not touch or rub the eyes or sleep facedown.

    Ongoing:

    • Gently clean eyes daily with diluted baby shampoo or a gentle eye cleanser made specifically for your lashes.  Use a fine tipped makeup brush and gently brush it through at the base of your lashes, rinse thoroughly and pat dry with paper towel.
    • Avoid touching the lashes.  No excessive rubbing, picking or pulling on the extensions.
    • Avoid sleeping on eyelash extensions (on your stomach).  They can get bent or damaged.
    • Do not curl or trim eyelash extensions.
    • Do not use oil based lotions, cleansers or makeup around the eyes.
    • Avoid Saunas and steam rooms.

Yes.  One of the main advantages of lash extensions is never needing to wear mascara again.  However, if they want, clients can use a water-based mascara.  Do not use waterproof mascaras on lash extensions.

The client will be reclined comfortably with eyes closed while eyelash extensions are being applied individually to the natural eyelashes.  It generally takes 90-120 minutes to apply a full set of eyelash extensions.  The procedure is so relaxing and comfortable that many clients fall asleep.  A retouch can be done in as little as 30-45 minutes.
